Sound Workshop series 20 (16 channels modular)
23 456:-
This console sounds great and has a really flexible 3-band sweepable midrange (wide...300Hz to 6kHz). Blocks sound great too.
features:
-16 channels of pressure/eq. with a separate switchable line input
-All 12 channels have insert patch OUT and patch IN
-8 definable channels with adjustable output level
-Mix out (stereo)
- Control room output (stereo)
-Studio Out (stereo)
- Echo transmission and return (stereo)
-2 bus Stereo In/Out labeled "Tape" (80s)
It has been completely overhauled by the previous owner.
It was unused for a while, but I cleaned the blocks and connectors. Of course, a little revitalization is needed when you want 100% functionality.
Historical sound
Here's an online write up/opinion by MSI Recording describing some of the early SW history:
"Sound Workshop began building consoles after API closed it’s Long Island factory in 1978. Most of the original engineers, including Paul Galbert, who had designed the API 554 sweep and the 954 automated equalizers, went to work for Sound Workshop and later for Otari when it acquired Sound Workshop. Some people affectionately refer to the Sound Workshop boards as “the poor man’s API”. We don’t agree at all, and although we love the sound of API gear, to us the SW console sounds fatter and more punchy than the original API desks. A bit more of that “brown sound”, as the look of the board would suggest. Early recordings by artists like U2 and Twisted Sister were tracked on these boards."
